100,000 M1911's were about ready to be sold to the civilian market when the hydroplague hit. Almost immediately, these firearms were distributed among the militia raised to keep the peace. When this failed, these guns were scattered across the country, many finding their way into the hands of folks from all walks of life, though only vigilantes and their superiors are allowed to carry such weapons. The M1911 is chambered for .45 ACP and has a 7-round magazine, usually more than enough to deal with the common rabble, though a smart vigilante carries at least one spare magazine in case things go from bad to ugly. A few civilians may secretly have them, and keep them hidden in their dwellings for emergencies or some last stand against agents of the government. M1911's are a symbol of vigilante status, often given upon contract both as a symbol of said contract and the most common personal weapon.
