These cloth coverings were created out of the need for sailors to avoid all contact with the deadly water they traveled on. They combine two layers of cloth, with a pair of goggles sewn in between. The whole thing is a single article of clothing, much like a helmet worn by the knights of medieval times. This is to prevent any individual part from coming loose and unraveling during a time of duress.

The helm can be stifling during the summer time, but most veteran sailors are wise enough to sweat it out rather than risk the potentially deadly spray of the river. Although, with more and more mixed race sailors plying the waters, the plague helms are quickly becoming more fashionable than practical; much to the indignation of the older river dogs.
